![]() Roast the meat in coconut oil for five minutes before eating. Crack the nut open to reveal the meat inside. The tree produces a fleshy, pear-shaped stalk called a cashew apple on its branches. The finest outcomes come from using the freshest seed possible. Toto provides each cashew tree ample room to flourish, the trees are placed 9.1 m apart. To give the Cashew tree’s root successfully create a pit hole of about 10 cm deep. After roasting, wash the nuts with soap and water (Wear gloves!) to remove any residual oil. The cashew is a boxing glove shape nut that grows at the end of the cashew apple. Cashews come from a tropical tree formally known as Anacardium occidentale. The cashew growing region’s temperature ranges from 10 to 40 C. Place the nuts in an old or disposable pan (now your designated cashew pan, as it may never get fully clean of the dangerous cashew oils).Įither cover the pan with a lid or fill the pan with sand until the nuts are covered– the nuts will spit liquid as they heat up, and you want something to catch or absorb it. To process the nuts, roast them OUTSIDE (never inside, where the fumes can build up and be breathed in). Young cashew trees with a Parkia biglobosa tree growing above (l), which is one of just two species farmers are instructed to leave standing on their farms. Wear long sleeved clothing, gloves, and goggles to keep the liquid from getting on your skin or in your eyes. USE CAUTION WHEN PROCESSING YOUR CASHEWS. The edible meat of the cashew is surrounded by a shell and a very dangerous, caustic liquid related to poison ivy. How to Harvest Cashews SafelyĪfter harvesting cashew nuts, you may want to store them up until you have a decent number, because processing them is a bit of an ordeal. The apples are juicy and tasty and can be eaten immediately. Set the nuts aside– you can store them in a cool, dry place for up to two years. Alternatively, you can wait until the fruit falls to the ground, when you know it’s ripe.Īfter harvesting, twist the nuts off of the apples by hand. Cashew harvesting can take place about two months after the fruit has set, when the apple takes on a pink or red cast and the nut turns gray. The apples and nuts will form in the winter or dry season. Each apple is paired with a single nut, and the visual effect is pretty bizarre. The fruit, called a cashew apple, isn’t really a fruit at all, but is actually the swollen end of the stem just above the cashew nut. When cashew nuts form, they appear growing out of the bottom of a big swollen fruit. Just make a hole, set the seedling in the dirt and spread out the roots, and fill the pot with more potting soil. Get some 20-gallon buckets or pots and fill them 75 of the way with potting soil. Keep reading to learn how to harvest cashews. Growing the cashew tree from a mature seedling is an easier and much more reliable way to grow these trees indoors. Growing in the tropics, cashew trees flower and fruit in the winter or dry season, producing a nut that’s much more than a nut and has to be handled with care.

![]() If you want to get published in a magazine, get to know it, pay attention to it. As an editor, it's very easy to see the writers that give a toss about getting published in the magazine, and the ones that have sent the same stuff to 100 magazines before it made it to us. There's a definite link between all of the stories/poems we publish, and if you're able to really see that and write something that appeals to that aesthetic, chances are that we'll like it. I can't tell you how many people blanket hit us with submissions without knowing the kind of work we publish, and without even really reading the guidelines. JD: Pick up a copy of the magazine and read the kind of work we publish. SQF: What advice can you offer new authors hoping to publish their first submission in Popshot Magazine? We don't get the time to get to know the characters in the stories, so whilst in a novel I would say they are equally important with a leaning towards character, I definitely think short fiction centres around a ruddy good plot. JD: In very short fiction, which is what Popshot publishes, plot is more important than character. Plot and character are equally important. ![]() SQF: Which of the following statements is true and why? Plot is more important than character. Make it read beautifully, make it difficult to stop reading, root it in an interesting concept and an original idea, and we'll struggle to turn it down. Otherwise, it's because it doesn't fit into the three things mentioned above. Most of the time it's as simple as the fact that there was a story that was better for us, or better for that particular theme. JD: There probably aren't another three reasons. SQF: What are the top three reasons a submission is rejected, other than not fitting into your answers to the above question and why? Thirdly, the story has to have some sort of bizarre/surreal/paradoxical/unexpected element to it, something that markedly separates it from the stories we tell each other on a day to day basis. However, if the first line makes me want to read the second line, and the second line makes me want to read the third, that's a good basis of a story and chances are, I'll arrive at the end and realise 10 minutes have passed without even being aware of it. We get submissions that you have to battle with to continue reading. Secondly, you shouldn't want to stop reading. If we're having to stop every few lines to try and work out what the writer is saying, we're not going to get lost in it. JD: Firstly, the basic criteria is that it's a story that reads seamlessly. The source code for Perian will be posted to either Google Code or Github after its final release, and developers interested in carrying the torch will be able to catch up by joining #perian on. Although the original team is moving on, the software may live on. If you're a longtime Perian lover, there's still some hope. We wouldn't be surprised if many Mac users these days aren't familiar with Perian. As pointed out by Dan Moren at Macworld, the explosion of iOS device popularity has helped to make H.264 and MPEG4 common distribution formats, rendering software like Perian less necessary for the everyday Mac user. Watching videos of various codecs can still be a challenge on the Mac today, but the problem isn't nearly as prominent as it once was. We'll wrap up our loose ends, pack up our bags, and move on to new and exciting projects," the Perian team wrote. "Starting 90 days after the final Perian release, we will no longer provide support. In its notice to users, the team said there would be one final update that will contain fixes since the last release, but that the last update may or may not work under OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). The software saw active support for several years after its launch, but the team felt there was only so far Perian could go. When Ars interviewed Perian lead developer Augie Fackler in 2006, he told us that Perian wasn't so much meant to replace VLC ?another popular video-watching option?but rather to make it possible to watch videos natively in places like Finder previews and Front Row. Perian made its debut in 2006 as freeware that allowed users to view a plethora of codecs that QuickTime didn't support natively, including DivX, XviD, 3viX, FLV, with plans for both Matroska and Ogg. The Perian team posted a notice to its users this week, saying that the software is "as complete as it will ever be under our stewardship." Though we can't disagree with the team's reason for wanting to move on, Perian's retirement is a bittersweet reminder of the earlier days of Apple, when watching videos of different codecs was a challenge on the Mac. Perian, the "Swiss Army knife for QuickTime," has decided to cease development after six years on the market. The source code will be made available on Github or Google Code.
